I had completely taken the idea of makeup for granted. I don’t think I’d realized just how thoroughly I’d accepted the beauty-with-help culture until I got out to southern California and noticed that most of the time they don’t bother. Hair shows it’s natural wave rather than a “blown-out” perfection. Mascera is a sign of a special occasion. They take casual to an entirely different level here, and there’s a great focus on natural beauty. (Not that they have everything right – there’s a culture of thin here that I didn’t expect). I gave up my hair dryer a couple weeks ago. Sunscreen is 90% of my beauty routine. And it’s completely liberating. Sometimes we don’t even realize we were wearing a mask until we take it off…
